Westside Dairy

The Westside Dairy Technology Farm is owned and operated by Syracuse Dairy, LLC. The primary dairy land is located near Johnson City, Kansas. The owner of Syracuse Dairy, Doug Geubelle, along with his team member Frank Mercurio approached the Kansas Water Office about trying to implement new water technologies within dairy operations that also encompass crop irrigation. Mr. Guebelle seeks to sustain operations on the farm by taking measures now to reduce water use for both stockwater and irrigation needs.

Technology

For the 2020 season, the farm plans include utilizing soil moisture probes on the irrigated fields along with some aerial imagery and installing more efficient irrigation nozzles. The fields will primarily grow corn silage and triticale for the cattle as well as plant cover crops for increased soil health and stability.

The dairy plans to install a new style of filtration system for the stockwater usage. By implementing this technology, the farm will be able to recycle and reuse barn water rather than having to pump more freshwater from the local groundwater.
